1929 Wightman Cup Tennis Here's some great old silent newsreel footage of the 1929 Wightman Cup tennis matches at Forest Hills between the best American and British female players. The focus is on Helen Wills, one of the greatest tennis champions ever.

The Wightman Cup was an event contested annually from 1923 through 1989 (with the exception of the 1940-45 war years).

Always a best-of-seven-match affair, the Americans won this 1929 session 4-3.

In the 61 times the Wightman Cup matches were held, the United States won 51 times. American domination led to declining interest in the event. After the U.S. easily won the 1989 event 7-0, the two countries agreed that Wightman Cup play would be suspended indefinitely.
