If someone were to silhouette Jackie Robinson's swing, I would still recognize the batter immediately. Nobody swung a bat like Robinson. To me he held his hands too high and had an extra 'hitch in his swing. It obviously worked for him, though. You can't argue with success.

Robinson remains one of the most important people in American history. Yet I wonder how many of today's athletes even know who he was.

About eight years ago I attended a SABR meeting in Toronto where the guest speaker was an expert on Robinson. The event was well publicized and the venue was packed. There was not one black person in the audience. Go figure.

Ruby Dee, the actress who played Robinson's wife Rachel in this film, played Jackie's mother in the made-for-TV film about Robinson's court-martial in 1990.

Waaa! I was just reading about this film a few days ago. He had many troubles in his sports career, but as a player he was excellent. Nobody like him. Noooobody!

He lettered in football, baseball, basketball, and track while attending UCLA. The man had dignity and class.
