The Liberator The Liberator was very cheap to manufacture and easy to mass-produce gun that could be dropped in large quantities over Europe to arm the resistance forces. Manufactured by the Guide Lamp Division of General Motors they cost $2.40 to make, about $30 2010 money. The weapons were not mass-dropped over Europe. More of these were dropped into China and the Philippines during World War II

Mills Brothers-Till Then I use to sit on daddy's lap and sing this song with him. Daddy is now in heaven but I think of him when I hear the Mills Brothers. Til then Daddy!

London Blitz Photo - 1940 Think we had it tough in North America during the Second World War? We could sleep in our beds at night reasonably certain we weren't going to be blown to smithereens. No so our British allies. This remarkable color photo from October 14, 1940 shows the effects of a typical nighttime air raid targetting London. (The Brits referred to it as "the Blitz.") A large German bomb blew a hole in a street near a bus stop, penetrated through to the Belham underground (subway) station below ground, and killed 68 people who thought they were out of harm's way. Later that same night, a bus travelling in blackout conditions--and thus unaware of the enormous hole in the street--drove into the gaping crater.

Buth Ruth Final Public Appearance According to a popular myth (perpetuated by New York Yankees fans), Babe Ruth's final appearance at a ballpark was in Yankee Stadium on Babe Ruth Day on June 13, 1948 where the terminally ill Bambino put on the pinstripes one last time and addressed a huge, subdued crowd in a croaky, cancer-ravaged voice. It makes for a fitting end to Babe Ruth's days as a public figure, but it wasn't so. Ruth's final public appearance actually occurred six days later at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis when the lowly Browns hosted the Yankees in a Saturday game. The ailing Ruth failed to create much excitement that day: The paid attendance was under 6,000. Ruth made a short, raspy speech and posed for this photo flanked by kids who had descended from the ballpark's grandstand. Ruth died two months later, on August 16, 1948. He was 53.
