This is a photo of a group of Canadian prisoners of war shortly after they were liberated in 1945. They had been captured by the Japanese after the defense of Hong Kong collapsed on Christmas Day 1941. Badly mistreated, they were used as slave labor in Japanese mines. Their emaciated condition speaks volumes.

Canada's Barabara Ann Scott is photographed doing a 'stag leap' in this photograph from December 1947. Two months later, at age 19, she would win the women's figure skating gold medal at the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland. At the opening ceremonies for the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, the 81-year-old Scott was one of the dignitaries who brought the Olympic flag into the stadium.

Here's a bit of baseball history: This news photo captures Jackie Robinson touching home plate after hitting his first major league home run. The date was April 18, 1947. The site was the Polo Grounds; it was the New York Giants' 1947 home opener. Robinson's homer came in the top of the third inning off Giants' pitcher Dave Koslo. The blow gave the visiting Brooklyn Dodgers a short-lived 2-1 lead. The Giants went on to win the game 10-4. Shaking Robinson's hand is #17 Tommy Tatum (who played only four games for Brooklyn in 1947). The Giants' catcher is #5 Walker Cooper.

The final leading lady of the Our Gang comedies was Janet Burston. She joined the troupe in 1940 as a five-year-old during the MGM era and stayed until the series meekly ran its course in 1944. After Darla Hood left in 1942, Burston became the Gang's female lead by default. She is pictured here in a scene circa 1942. Note that Spanky McFarland is still part of the Gang, as is Billie (Buckwheat) Thomas. That's young Robert Blake (who acted under the name of Mickey Gubitosi) on Burston's right. In the final movies of the series, Janet was the romantic interest of Froggy Laughlin (standing between Spanky and Buckwheat). Burston didn't have much of a film career after her Our Gang days ended. She died of cancer in 1998 at the age of 63.

In the spring of 1944 the Allies were poised to land in German-occupied France. The only uncertainty was where and when. Tight security over the enormous operation was paramount. (One American general was demoted and sent back to the Unites States for merely speculating on an invasion date at a social gathering.) Accordingly, British Intelligence was aghast when several key code names linked to the D-Day invasion began appearing as answers in the Daily Telegraph crossword puzzles in the month before the June 6 invasion. The code names of all five beaches (Gold, Sword, Juno, Omaha, Utah), the portable harbors (Mulberry), the naval support (Neptune), and the entire operation (Overlord) appeared! Agents questioned Leonard Dawe, a 54-year-old local schoolmaster, who had submitted the puzzles. Dawe didn't know what the fuss was about. He told the agents the words simply fit the puzzles. For years the incident was regarded as a remarkable coincidence. However, in 1984, one of Dawe's former students at the Strand School shed more light on the subject. Ronald French, who was 14 in 1944, said Dawe routinely had his students fill in crossword grids as a mental exercise. Dawe kept the especially good grids, wrote accompanying clues, and submitted them to the Daily Telegraph. The boys often socialized with the Allied troops stationed nearby and likely acquired the words by overhearing their conversations. There is no evidence that Dawe was a German agent, nor is there any evidence that the Germans benefitted from this odd security breach.

Nat King Cole's 1948 recording of the song was a major hit -
"Nature Boy" is a song composed by Eden Ahbez, published in 1947.
The song tells a fantasy of a "strange enchanted boy... who wandered very far" only to learn that "the greatest thing... was just to love and be loved in return".
Eden Ahbez was american songwriter whose lifestyle in California was INFLUENTIAL on the hippie movement...

This song was written by Eden Ahbez, one of the strangest songwriters of the pre-Hippie era. He was a poet, but more accurately a proto-Hippie, choosing to wear long hair, a full beard and long, white, flowing garments that promoted a Christ-like appearance. He lived in Griffith Park in Los Angeles and ate fruit, vegetables and nuts. THIS "NATURE BOY" (in my words)claimed to have been raised in an orphanage and to have crossed the US on foot 8 times before age 35. He moved to Los Angeles in the '40s, lived on 3 dollars a week
Ahbez implored Nat King Cole's manager to look at his manuscript of "Nature Boy." Cole liked the Yiddish melody, and the lyrics and added it to his act. It was well received so Cole decided to record it. One problem: Cole and Capitol Records could not find Ahbez in order to secure the publishing rights. Finally they located Ahbez, camped beneath the first L in the "Hollywood" sign.
