The average American sports fan has probably never heard of George Best, but in the early 1970s, he was probably the best soccer player in the world. A resident of Northern Ireland, Best caught the attention of a scout for Manchester United at age 15 who reported that he had found a 'genius.' Best had incredible balance and could strike beautiful, creative, and powerful shots with both feet. In this clip from September 18, 1971 Best scores three goals for Manchester United versus West Ham United. (The third one is especially spectacular!) Unfortunately Best fell into a hedonistic lifestyle. He once joked that he had spent most of his fortune on booze, women and fast cars--and had squandered the rest! Best became an alcoholic and died way too young at age 59 in 2005.

This ten-minute clip, condensed from scenes from a January 1977 episode titled "Stretch Cunningham, Goodbye," proves what a great TV program All in the Family was. Here's the plot: Archie's beloved work buddy Stretch Cunningham passes away suddenly from a heart attack. Archie is cajoled into delivering a eulogy at the funeral. He enlists the help of son-in-law Mike (Meathead) Stivic to write a eulogy containing biblical references--only to discover at the last possible moment that Stretch was secretly Jewish! The clip mixes great humor and heartfelt love.

ABC had high hopes for the sitcom That's My Mama when it debuted in the fall of 1974. This clip shows the bland opening credits from the first season. The sitcom was set in a middle-class black section of Washington, D.C. It featured Clifton Davis as Clifton Curtis, a youthful barber who was the proprietor of a shop he inherited from his late father. Theresa Merritt played his widowed mother, Eloise. Slotted on Wednesday nights directly against against NBC's Little House on the Prairie, the sitcom failed to crack the Nielsen top 30 at any time during its first season and was nearly axed. Still thinking it had potential, ABC kept it on for part of a second season. When ratings did not improve, That's My Mama was terminated after its 39th episode aired on December 17, 1975--although a rerun was shown the following week. The sitcom did, however, launch the career of Ted Lange, who played the roll of Clifton's flamboyant friend, Junior. Lange went on to bigger and better things as bartender Isaac Washington on The Love Boat.

Almost a year ago I posted a clip from my favorite Happy Days episode: They Call It Potsie Love. However, the source video has since been removed. (Undaunted, I'm posting it again; this time the Italian version! Don't worry; there's only a moment of Italian in the clip.) The plot revolves around Joanie Cunningham developing a major crush on her brother's friend Potsie Webber. Her crush begins when Potsie wants to practise the song "Put Your Head on My Shoulders," but claims he can only sing it passionately if he sings it to a girl. Since 14-year-old Joanie is the closest thing to a girl available, he sings it to her. Her facial expressions say it all.
