The Rock This Is Your Life In 1999, Mick Foley paid "tribute" to The Rock with This Is Your Life, starting a partial tradition that he carried on with other WWE superstars, but this was the first, and one of the funniest.

Queen of Mean Convicted, 1992 Leona Helmsley, nicknamed the "Queen of Mean" by the press, receives a four-year prison sentence, 750 hours of community service, and a $7.1 million tax fraud fine in New York. For many, Helmsley became the object of loathing and disgust when she quipped that "only the little people pay taxes." Leona's husband, Harry, was one of the world's wealthiest real estate moguls, with an estimated $5 billion to $10 billion in property holdings. The couple lived in a dazzling penthouse overlooking Central Park and also maintained an impressive mansion in Greenwich, Connecticut. Leona, who operated the Helmsley Palace on Madison Avenue, was severely disliked by her employees. Though they lavishly furnished their homes and hotel, the Helmsleys were curiously diligent about evading the required payments and taxes for their purchases. Much of their personal furniture was written off as a business expense, and there were claims that the Helmsleys extorted free furnishings from their suppliers. Contractors were hardly ever paid on time-if at all-and many filed lawsuits to recover even just a portion of what they were owed. Leona reportedly also purchased hundreds of thousands of dollars of jewelry in New York City but insisted that empty boxes be sent to Connecticut so that she could avoid the sales tax. Given her offensive personality, many were quite pleased by Leona's legal troubles. Even celebrity lawyer Alan Dershowitz could not win her immunity from the law. Following her conviction, Federal Judge John Walker publicly reprimanded her, saying, "Your conduct was the product of naked greed [and] the arrogant belief that you were above the law." Leona Helmsley was sent to jail in 1992 and was released in 1994. In 2002, Helmsley, whose husband Harry died in 1997, again found herself in court after being sued by Charles Bell, a former employee who accused Leona of firing him soley because he was homosexual. A jury ordered Helmsley to pay him more than $11 million in damages. Helmsley died in August 2007 at age 87. She famously left $12 million to her dog, Trouble.

1993 Commercial Predicts the Future Back in 1993 AT&T created this short commercial that made some heady predictions about future technology that, at the time, seemed like science fiction. They all came true, however.

Sad Decline of Benny Hill In 1990 The Benny Hill Show was airing in reruns in 97 countries around the world--but not in Great Britain where it had originated. The scourge of political correctness had forced Thames Television to end its association with Hill in 1989 after 20 successful years. Thames defended the move by saying Hill's periodic specials were becoming too costly, viewership was down, and the 65-year-old Hill was looking tired. However, by the late 1980s it was becoming unfashionable for Hill's sexually charged farcical comedy skits to be shown on British TV. (One anti-Hill crusader wildly blamed The Benny Hill Show for all the sexual assaults in the UK!) Hill did not need the money, but he did miss being on TV. He had open offers to appear in Las Vegas and name his price, but Hill did not want to make the journey overseas. Hill was a true loner who never married and was not known to have had a long-term relationship with anyone. The few friends he had said his dismissal by Thames was akin to handing Hill a death sentence. With assets worth more than 7.5 million British pounds, Hill was a bit of a miser. He never owned a car, he did his own shopping, and he lived in a very modest flat. He was also a slob. His flat was usually filled with dirty dishes, papers strewn everywhere, and dirty clothes on the floor. A friend once asked him why he threw his clothes on the floor. "Because they won't stick to the ceiling!" was his pithy answer. In February 1992, the 68-year-old Hill suffered mild heart attack. He was ordered to go on a diet. Two months later he died of another heart attack while sitting in a favorite chair in front of his television. His body was not discovered for three days. Hill's will had not been updated since 1961. The will's beneficiaries (his parents and his sister) had already died. The comedian's vast fortune was eventually split among nieces and nephews whom Hill had barely known. Among those who considered Benny Hill a comic genius were people as diverse as Charlie Chaplin, Michael Jackson and Walter Cronkite!

Remains of George Mallory Found - 1999 Seventy-Five years after British mountaineer George Mallory vanished in June 1924 in his attempt to be the first man to scale Mount Everest, an expedition from National Geographic was organized to try to find his remains--along with those of his climbing colleague Andrew Irvine. The two were last seen alive about 800 meters from the summit. In 1979 a Chinese mountaineer reported to a Japanese climber that he had come across the remains of "an Englishman" during an ascent in 1975. The Chinese climber was killed in an avalanche the following day before he could give precise directions to the corpse. Going on the general location the Chinese climber had provided, the 1999 expedition covered a search area about the size of a dozen football fields. Sure enough, on May 1, 1999, Mallory's mummified corpse, sun bleached to an alabaster white, was discovered face down and fused to the mountain scree by American searcher Conrad Anker. ID tags on the clothing quickly confirmed the body was indeed Mallory's. Found in Mallory's possession was a letter from his brother and an unpaid bill Mallory owed to a London clothing shop. Mallory had several broken bones and a punctured skull, leading to speculation that he had severely injured himself in a sudden, violent fall and likely froze to death in a helpless state in a matter of minutes. Whether Mallory made it to Everest's summit or not is a matter of heated debate. Irvine's body has yet to be found. Warning: The clip is a little bit gruesome.
