Richard Dawson 1932-2012 It has been reported that Richard Dawson died on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. According to his son Gary, Dawson succumbed to complications related to esophageal cancer. He was 79. Dawson was the famed host of ABC's Family Feud from its inception 1976 to 1985. He was also a regular (and probably the best) panelist on CBS' Match Game from 1973 to 1978. He played Corporal Peter Newkirk on Hogan's Heroes for the entire run of that sitcom (1965 to 1971).

Jenna Talackova - Transgender Beauty Pageant Controversy Jenna Talackova became something of a curiosity when she became embroiled in a beauty pageant controversy. Talackova was originally denied the right to enter the 2012 Miss Universe Canada pageant on the grounds that she was born a male. Donald Trump, who owns the rights to the Miss Universe Pageant, overruled the initial decison. On May 19, the 23-year-old blonde from Vancouver was one of the final 12 contestants, but failed to make the final five at the pageant, held in Toronto. Another Vancouver contestant, Sahar Biniaz, 26, claimed the crown and advanced to the international Miss Universe competition, but she didn't get anywhere near the publicity that Talackova did. Talackova was one of four contestants named Miss Congeniality. Talackova's lawyer Gloria Allred said that Talackova shouldn't feel too disappointed about not winning. "She's still a winner as far as I'm concerned," Allred said during an intermission. "She won an 'herstoric' civil rights victory and that I think is frankly more important than anything, any victory she would win, even representing Miss Canada." Talackova was born Walter Talackova and under went a sex change operation four years ago. Talackova was the first transgender competitor to seek the Miss Universe Canada crown and, predictably, attracted extensive media coverage.

Do You Recognize This Couple This is a photo (circa 2010) of Richard Bull and Katherine MacGregor who played Nels and Harriet Oleson on the classic family western series Little House on the Prairie. Nels was the gentle, good-natured, lovable proprietor of Walnut Grove's mercantile. Harriet...not so much. (...And I won't even discuss how their two kids behaved!) Both Bull and MacGregor are well into their eighties now.

Canada Discontinues Pennies On May 4, 2012 Canada's Finance Minister Jim Flaherty was on hand at the Royal Canadian Mint to see the last penny roll off the line. Six weeks earlier he had announced that Canada's one-cent coin would be discontinued. An overwhelming majority of Canadians applauded the government's decision. Most felt the move was long overdue. Citing low purchasing power and rising production costs, the government decided to phase the penny out of existence starting in the fall of 2012, when the Royal Canadian Mint will stop distributing the one-cent coin to financial institutions. Over time, that will lead to the penny effectively becoming extinct, although the government noted that one-cent coins will always be accepted in cash transactions for as long as people still hold on to them. The value of the penny has decreased to about 1/20th of its purchasing power in the last 100 years. Indeed, the lowly penny has fallen so far that Ottawa described it as a "burden to the [Canadian] economy" in a pamphlet explaining the change. In part because of rising prices for the metals it's made of, it actually costs 1.6 cents to produce every penny. The government estimates it loses $11 million a year producing and distributing the penny, and that doesn't include the costs and frustrations for businesses and consumers that use them in transactions.
