National Anthem in Boston - Apr. 17/13 Very powerful: Two days after the bombings at the Boston Marathon, the Boston Bruins hosted the Buffalo Sabres in an NHL game. Rene Rancourt, the Bruins' longtime anthem singer, allowed the fans to carry the tune.

Isner-Mahut Wimbledon Marathon A first-round men's singles match at the 2010 Wimbledon tourney between American John Isner and Frenchman Nicolas Mahut was, in many respects, the greatest tennis match ever contested. It is the longest match in tennis history, measured both by time and number of games. The extraordinary match, contested over three days, lasted 11 hours and 5 minutes with Isner eventually prevailing 64, 36, 67(79), 76(73), 7068 for a total of 183 games. The match began at 6:13 pm on Tuesday, June 22. At 9:07 pm, due to fading light, play was suspended at two sets all. After resuming on Wednesday, at 2:05 pm, the record for longest match was broken at 5:45 pm. The light faded again, and so play was suspended at 9:10 pm, with the final set tied at 59 games all. Play resumed at 3:43 pm on Thursday. Isner won at 4:48 pm, the final set having lasted 8 hours, 11 minutes. Both players broke numerous Wimbledon and tennis records, including each serving over 100 aces, with the match being referred to as "the endless match." Twice the score of the final set exceeded the scoreboard's ability to record it. (A computer technician was called in to address the problem both times.) Of course such a lengthy match is only possible at events such as Wimbledon where no tiebreaker is played in the final set.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the computerized tennis rankings, all 25 men to have been ranked number one by the ATP were invited to be present. Nineteen attended the gala. Fourteen are shown in this photo. Can you name them all?

Jim Joyce - Missed Call Fallout About a year ago I posted a photo of teary-eyed veteran MLB umpire Jim Joyce whose blown call at first base with two outs in the ninth inning cost Detroit Tigers' pitcher Armando Gallaraga a rare perfect game on June 2, 2010. Amazingly, Joyce became something of a folk hero for admitting his mistake and accepting the criticism that followed. Here is an excellent inteview that Joyce conducted with MLB.com six days after the blown call in which Joyce expresses his astonishment about the support he had received.

Largest Prime Number Found If you got through elementary school, you should know what a prime number is. (It's a number that can only be evenly divided by two numbers--itself and one. Numbers such as 11, 23, 89, and 97 fit this discription.) On January 25, 2013, a computer program called GIMPS found the largest known proven prime number: (2 to the power of 57,885,161) -1. It's a number with 17,425,170 digits. By comparison, the largest known prime number in 1876 had a mere 39 digits. Because there are an infinite amount of numbers, mathematical theory concludes there should be an infinite amount of prime numbers too. It's just a matter of finding them. GIMPS has found the previous 12 highest prime numbers.

Boston Bruins Amazing Comeback On May 13, 2013, one of the most stunning and improbable comebacks in sports history occurred. With under 11 minutes left in regulation time, the Boston Bruins rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the seventh game of their opening round NHL playoff series versus the Toronto Maple Leafs. Boston had only scored three goals in the previous eight periods of the series before rallying. It was wild euphoria for Boston's fans--but utter disbelief for Toronto's fans. This condensed highlight clip shows the Leafs taking a 4-1 lead in the third period, the three Boston goals that tied the game, and the overtime winner by Patrice Bergeron.

2011 Stanley Cup Riot Commentary One of the most embarrassing episodes in Canadian history: On June 15, 2011, the Boston Bruins soundly defeated the Vancouver Canucks 4-0 to win the Stanley Cup in the seventh game of the finals in Vancouver. Disappointed Canucks fans and mindless hooligans (those two terms may be interchangeable) did not accept the defeat well. They laid waste to Vancouver's downtown--much as they did in 1994 when the Canucks lost in the finals to the New York Rangers! The following night on CBC's National News, commentator Rex Murphy bluntly expressed his disgust with the rioters.

Chubby Gets a Headstone - 2012 Norman (Chubby) Chaney was the first member of the Our Gang troupe to die. He passed away in May 1936 at age 21 from myocarditis and a glandular condition. His family could not afford to buy a headstone for Norman's grave in the Baltimore cemetery where he is interred, so his final resting place was unmarked for 76 years. However, in 2012, an online fund-raiser solicited more than $4,000 in donations to have this attractive black granite marker erected on the gravesite. About a dozen Our Gang fans attended the official unveiling on November 10, 2012.
