Marketing Blunder - White Coca-Cola Cans On December 1, 2011, Coca-Cola temporarily replaced its traditional red cans with a white design to draw attention to the plight of polar bears in the warming arctic. While the cause may have been good, the public's reaction to the move was overwhelmingly negative. People routinely mistook regular Coca-Cola for Diet Coke which comes in a silver can. The company received complaints from devoted fans of both Coca-Cola and Diet Coke: Diabetics and others who cannot consume sugary drinks were especially miffed when they bought the wrong product. Sales suffered as people who were looking for the traditional red cans couldn't find them. One convenience store owner in New Jersey reported that several customers tried to return opened cans when they realized they had purchased regular Coke instead of Diet Coke. On January 1, 2012, Coca-Cola ended the polar bear 'awareness program' and announced a return to the red cans of its popular 125-year-old beverage. The lesson of Coca-Cola's white can debacle? "Don't mess with the brand," said one marketing expert.

Jeopardy Champion Jason Keller Jason Keller, 30, a private tutor from Highland Park, NJ, won $213,900 as a nine-time champion on Jeopardy! He won for the first time on the December 16, 2011 episode and successfully defended his title eight times until losing on the December 29 episode. His winnings rank sixth in the syndicated show's 27-year history. (It should be noted that contestants were limited to five wins until September 2003.) I know Jason through his connection to tournament Scrabble. (He is one of the top 100 Scrabble players in North America; he finished 19th at the U.S. Nationals in 2011.) Jason attended a Scrabble tourney in Albany, NY just in time to watch the broadcast where he was defeated! He was justifiably greeted by his fellow Scrabble players with great enthusiasm. Jason was called upon to make a speech. He told the crowd a few interesting tidbits about his experiences on Jeopardy!: Tapings are done just two days per week (Tuesday and Wednesday). Jason's shows were taped in mid and late October. Jason won his first game on the last show of the Tuesday taping. He then won all five shows of the Wednesday taping. He then had to fly home for a Scrabble event that weekend and fly back to Los Angeles for further tapings. He won two more games on the Tuesday taping before losing. Jason said he has to wait 120 days to get his winnings--and he will lose about 42 percent of them in taxes. All Jeopardy! contestants are responsible for their own travel and hotel costs. However, the champion of the final show on Wednesday is flown home and back to LA for the next week's taping(s) at the show's expense. In an interesting twist, the player who defeated Jason was Dave Leach--who himself became a six-time champion. The was the first time in Jeopardy! history that a super-champion (a player who won more than five games) was dethroned by another super-champion.

North Korean Soccer Team Punished For Losing The North Korean soccer team qualified for the 2010 World Cup tournament in South Africa. Their chances of success were considered slim. In fact North Korean television, fearing an embarrassment, planned no coverage of the team's games. They lost their first match to mighty Brazil by a close 2-1 score. With cause for optimism, arrangements were made for the team's second game to be broadcast in North Korea. To the chagrin of the communist regime, Portugal routed the North Koreans 7-0. As soon as the score reached 2-0, the signal was yanked off the air. In their final game, Ivory Coast beat North Korea 3-0. When the players returned home, they were publicly shamed: the team and its manager were forced onto a stage at the People's Palace of Culture in front of 400 government officials, students, and journalists. According to reports, the athletes were subjected to a six-hour barrage of criticism for their poor performances that was led by a TV commentator and sports minister Pak Myong-chol. The players were asked to step up in turn and publicly criticize manager Kim Jong-hun, who had apparently been singled out for punishment. He was forced into a construction job because, it is thought, his team's failure was seen as a personal betrayal of Kim Jong-un, the son of leader Kim Jong-il.

One-Legged Wrestler Wins NCAA Title Arizona State University (ASU) senior wrestler Anthony Robles capped off his college career accomplishing the most difficult task in the sport: winning the NCAA Championship. He earned the 2011 125-pound title with an impressive 7-1 decision over Iowa sophomore and defending national champion Matt McDonough on March 19. The championship victory didn’t come easy, but the 21-year-old Mesa, Arizona native is no stranger to overcoming odds. Robles was born with just one leg, but that never stopped him from doing anything any two-legged person can do. Since he was a toddler, Robles refused any special assistance typically allotted for someone missing a limb. According to reports, he tossed aside his prosthetic leg when he was only 3, choosing instead to hop on one leg or use his arms to walk. When he reached the sixth grade, he broke a record at his school for the most pushups performed. But the record-setting performances didn’t stop there. Robles first started wrestling in the eighth grade, joining in after watching one of his cousins during a practice. He stuck with it and by the time he reached age 17, he had won two Arizona state wrestling championships, earning a 46-0 record during his junior and senior years at Mesa High School. He remained successful at ASU, earning All-American honors, along with a couple Pac-10 Conference titles. But Robles said the National Title was by far his greatest athletic accomplishment so far. “I had a lot of butterflies going out there. I’ve dreamt about stepping on that stage a dozen times, and this whole year I’ve just been preparing for that moment,” Robles told the Daily Iowan. “I was scared. I was scared out there, but as soon as I hit that first takedown, I sort of relaxed.” Most may immediately think of the disadvantages a one-legged fighter may have, but there are a few advantages to wrestling with just one leg, too. Because he doesn’t carry the weight of an additional leg, Robles can weigh in at 125 pounds with a lot more muscle weight in his upper body than his opponents. He has also developed a unique style of wrestling with just one leg, which opponents have difficulties preparing for. “First time wrestling a tough opponent like that, it’s quite obvious there’s a difference in style of someone that has one leg and a large upper body as opposed to anyone else in the country,” said McDonough, who will return as the nation’s top wrestler next year. “It’s definitely not an experience to take lightly…” Robles, who will graduate from ASU in May, told ESPN reporters that his wrestling days are now over, but he plans on pursuing a career in public speaking. He always told the media that he wrestles for the love of the sport, and he’ll apply that same passion towards uplifting and motivating those in need. "It inspires me when I get kids, even adults, who write me on Facebook and send me letters in the mail saying that I've inspired them," Robles told USA Today. “I want to keep it up.”
